This is one of the best books on leadership I have ever read. Libby and her inspiration Yaya do such a great job communicating one of the main challenges of business ownership: learning to lead while trusting your team. It can be so tough for many leaders when they go from solopreneur or boss of every department, to growing a team to be able to empower them and trust them. Many great themes in this book, and I hope when I read this to my son I’ll be able to communicate it to him.
I love how colorful the book is—and the illustrations are adorably unique. I appreciate how Leading Like an Elephant offers a different perspective on leadership than what I’m used to seeing. It’s always that lone leader, never really thinking about the team. I just hope my son’s okay with the fact that this one’s going to be on regular rotation—momma’s officially obsessed. As someone who plays a role similar to Yaya’s in my own business, I hope to be able to share these ideas with him. I love that this book was created with that exact goal in mind.
My name is Libby DeLucien, and I have kind of a funny job to explain—because I help people with their jobs! I'm what you’d call an entrepreneur, which is just a big word for someone who builds businesses from ideas. I’ve started several companies, including ones that help families keep their homes clean and organized, and others that help business owners find great employees and grow their teams without getting overwhelmed.
One of my favorite things to do is solve problems. When I see someone who’s working too much and feeling stressed out, I get excited—because that means I get to help! I show them how to create smart systems and little “cheat codes” called playbooks, so their business runs smoothly even when they take a break. Just like how teachers have a plan for the whole day so everything stays on track, I help grown-ups do that with their companies!
I also write books—one for adults to help them stop working all the time, and one for kids just like you, about this big-hearted elephant named Yaya who learns how to be a kind and confident leader. (Fun fact: my daughter’s nickname is actually Yaya!) I believe being a great leader doesn’t mean being the boss of everyone—it means helping everyone feel important and supported.
So if you’ve ever had a big idea, or love helping others, or even just enjoy organizing your toys or getting your friends to work together on a game—you might already have what it takes to be an entrepreneur or to lead a company! And that’s pretty awesome.
Teaching empathy in leadership is essential because the best leaders aren’t the ones who do everything themselves—they’re the ones who listen, understand, and build up the people around them. In Leading Like an Elephant, Yaya learns that trying to control every detail only leads to frustration and burnout. It’s not until she stops to truly hear her team’s feelings and ideas that everything begins to change. When leaders lead with empathy, they create environments where people feel valued and understood—and that’s where collaboration and real growth can begin.
The story also shows that empathy doesn’t mean weakness—it means trust. Yaya’s journey helps kids see that being a strong leader is about lifting others up, not pushing them harder. Her team becomes more capable, confident, and connected once she chooses to care instead of control. By teaching kids this early, we’re helping them grow into leaders who know that kindness and listening are powerful tools—not just in business, but in every part of life.
